Autodesk's AU 2026 announcement points towards assistants that can help users work across more of its design and construction products. For a contractor, the immediate question is practical: which capability can the team use today, on which information, with what review before an action takes effect?

What Autodesk announced

On 15 September 2026 Autodesk described advances in agentic AI across Forma, Fusion and Flow, including a preview of an expanded Autodesk Assistant. The release distinguishes existing Assistant capabilities from the next-generation experience being previewed, and describes a standalone experience planned for 2027. A preview or roadmap statement should not be treated as a generally available feature. See source 1.

This is a report of Autodesk's announcement, not independent evidence of accuracy, time savings or suitability for a particular project. Check the current product documentation and your account's available features before building the capability into a programme or procurement decision.

Start with a bounded information task

Our suggested first trial is a task whose answer a reviewer can check against an identified source. For example, ask for a summary of a small, approved set of project instructions and require references to the documents used. Do not start by allowing an untested system to change issued drawings or make contractual commitments.

Measure usefulness as well as speed. A fast answer that sends the coordinator back through the entire folder to verify it may not save time. Record the review effort, missing references and unsupported conclusions alongside the time to produce a response.

Ask five questions before connecting project data

  • Availability: is this function released in our product, plan and region?
  • Access: does it respect the permissions of the person using it?
  • Sources: can the reviewer identify the exact files and revisions used?
  • Action control: which changes need explicit approval and can they be traced?
  • Data arrangements: where is information processed and what contractual terms apply?

Get the answers from current documentation and your supplier agreement. Do not assume that two features with the same assistant branding have identical access, retention or processing arrangements.

Test revision awareness deliberately

Create a non-sensitive sample with a superseded drawing and a current drawing that differ in one important note. Ask the assistant which note controls, then inspect the evidence it gives. A fluent answer is insufficient if it cannot distinguish the issue status or explain uncertainty.

Add an instruction that is genuinely ambiguous. The useful outcome may be a question for the project team, rather than a confident completion. Record whether the tool identifies the missing decision and avoids inventing dimensions, equipment references or approval status.

What this means for drawing production

The opportunity is to make information easier to find and routine preparation easier to review. That is an editorial assessment, not a claim that the announced system can perform every part of a CAD workflow. File validation, scope agreement, technical review and controlled issue still need defined responsibilities in the process you adopt.

For a pilot, agree the sample, reviewer, acceptance criteria and stop conditions before running it. Keep the result alongside the source pack. Expand only when your own test demonstrates a useful, traceable outcome. Future product demonstrations can inform a shortlist; a repeatable project trial should inform the decision.
